SmartThings: Adding Devices to Your Smart Home
Your Digital Lifestyles installation comes with devices already added and configured. If you purchase additional smart devices that are compatible with SmartThings, here is how to add them yourself.
Before You Start
- Make sure the device is SmartThings-compatible (check the packaging for a SmartThings or Matter logo)
- Have the device powered on and within range of your hub
- Know which room you want to assign the device to
Adding a Device
- Open the SmartThings app and tap the Devices tab.
- Tap the + icon in the top right corner and select Add Device.
- For devices with a QR code: Tap Scan QR Code and scan the code on the device or its packaging.
- For Bluetooth devices: Tap Scan Nearby and the app will detect devices in pairing mode.
- For manual setup: Choose the device by brand or type from the list.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete pairing. Some devices require you to press a button to enter pairing mode.
- Assign the device to a room and give it a descriptive name (such as “Living Room Lamp”).
Tips for Successful Pairing
- Place the device within 1–3 metres of the hub during initial pairing, then move it to its permanent location
- If a device previously belonged to another hub or system, factory reset it before pairing
- For Z-Wave devices, perform a Z-Wave exclusion in the SmartThings app first, then add it – IMPORTANT NOTE: if you have a Smart Things Hub V4 or newer, you will not be able to add any Z-Wave devices; only Hub V1-3 is compatible with Z-Wave.
- Keep your SmartThings app and hub firmware up to date for the widest device compatibility
ℹ️ Tip: If the app says “No devices found,” make sure the device is actually in pairing mode. Many devices require a specific button hold (usually 5–10 seconds) to enter pairing mode.
