SmartThings: Cannot Add or Discover New Devices

If the SmartThings app is stuck on “Scanning” or says “No devices found” when you try to add a new device, there are several things to check.

Common Causes and Fixes

1. The Device Is Not in Pairing Mode

Most smart devices need to be placed into pairing mode before they can be discovered. This usually involves holding a button for 5–10 seconds until an LED blinks. Check the device’s manual for the exact pairing procedure.

2. The Device Is Still Paired to a Previous Hub

If the device was previously connected to another SmartThings hub or a different smart home system, it needs to be factory reset first. For Z-Wave devices, perform an exclusion from the SmartThings app before attempting to pair. IMPORTANT NOTE: If your SmartThings Hub is V4 or newer, it is not compatible with Z-Wave devices.

3. The Device Is Too Far From the Hub

During initial pairing, keep the device within 1–3 metres of the hub. Once paired, you can move it to its final location.

4. The Device Is Not Compatible

Not all smart devices work with SmartThings. Check that the device is listed as compatible on the SmartThings website or has a “Works with SmartThings” or Matter logo on its packaging.

5. The Hub Needs a Restart

Sometimes the hub’s radio can get stuck. Unplug the hub for 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait for solid green, then try scanning again.

6. App Permissions

Make sure the SmartThings app has permission to use Bluetooth and Local Network access on your phone. These permissions are required for device discovery. Check your phone’s Settings > Apps > SmartThings > Permissions.

ℹ️ Tip: Start the scan in the SmartThings app first, then put the device into pairing mode. The timing matters — the app needs to be actively scanning when the device broadcasts its pairing signal.
