SmartThings: Devices Not Responding or Showing Incorrect Status

If one or more of your smart devices are not responding to commands, showing as “Offline,” or displaying the wrong status (such as a light showing “Off” when it is actually on), here is how to fix it.

For a Single Device

  1. Check the device’s power. Make sure the device is plugged in, has batteries, or has not been switched off at the wall.
  2. Check the distance from the hub. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices have a limited range (typically 10–30 metres indoors). If the device is far from the hub, you may need a repeater device in between.
  3. Reboot the device. Turn the device off and back on. For battery devices, remove the battery for 10 seconds and reinsert it.
  4. Refresh status in the app. Open the device in the SmartThings app, pull down to refresh, and check if the status updates.
  5. Remove and re-add the device. As a last resort, remove the device from SmartThings and pair it again from scratch.

For Multiple Devices

If several devices are not responding at the same time, the issue is likely with your hub or network rather than individual devices.

  1. Check that your hub is online (LED should be solid green).
  2. Reboot the hub by unplugging power for 30–60 seconds.
  3. Reboot your router and modem.
  4. For Zigbee interference: If your router is very close to the hub, move them at least one metre apart. Wi-Fi and Zigbee both use the 2.4 GHz band and can interfere with each other.
  5. For Z-Wave issues: Open the SmartThings app, go to your Hub settings, and run a Z-Wave Network Repair. This rebuilds the routing table and often resolves connectivity problems.

ℹ️ Tip: Devices that run on batteries (motion sensors, contact sensors) may stop responding when the battery is low. Check battery levels in the SmartThings app under the device’s detail page.
