SmartThings: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an internet connection for SmartThings to work?

Yes. While some basic Zigbee and Z-Wave automations can run locally on the hub, most features (remote access, notifications, cloud-based automations, voice assistant integration) require an active internet connection.

What happens if my power goes out?

When power is restored, the hub will automatically reconnect and resume normal operation. Any automations that were scheduled during the outage will not retroactively run, but future triggers will work as expected. Battery-powered sensors will continue to send data once the hub is back online.

Can I control SmartThings from multiple phones?

Yes. You can invite family members to your SmartThings location so they can control devices from their own phones. See Article 17 for instructions on inviting members.

Is there a monthly fee for SmartThings?

No. SmartThings is free to use. There is no monthly subscription for the core app, device control, or automation features.

Can I use SmartThings with Apple iPhone?

Yes. The SmartThings app is available for both iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android devices. You will need a Samsung account, but you do not need a Samsung phone.

How many devices can I connect?

SmartThings supports up to about 200 devices per hub, though optimal performance is usually seen with under 100 devices. The practical limit depends on how many automations and integrations are running.

Can I take my SmartThings system if I move?

Yes. You can remove your hub and devices from one home and set them up at a new address. You may need to update your location in the SmartThings app. Contact Digital Lifestyles support if you need assistance with relocation.

What should I do if I sell my home?

Contact Digital Lifestyles support before selling. We can transfer ownership of the SmartThings system to the new homeowner and help them set up their own Samsung account.
