SmartThings: Hub Freezing or Lagging — Performance Fix

If your SmartThings hub is responding slowly, automations are delayed, or devices take several seconds to react to commands, your hub may be overloaded or experiencing a temporary software issue.

Step 1: Clean Restart

  1. On your phone, force close the SmartThings app completely, then clear the app cache (not data) in your phone’s Settings > Apps > SmartThings > Storage.
  2. Unplug the hub’s power cable for 30–60 seconds while leaving the Ethernet cable connected.
  3. Plug the hub back in and wait for the LED to return to solid green.
  4. Test a simple action (turning one light on or off) to see if responsiveness has improved.

Step 2: Reduce the Load

If the hub is responsive after a reboot but slows down again over time, something in your configuration may be overloading it.

  • Temporarily disable complex automations or routines that trigger frequently (such as those based on motion sensors in busy areas)
  • Remove any old or unused device integrations that may be polling the hub repeatedly
  • If you are using legacy SmartApps or custom device handlers, consider whether they can be replaced with native SmartThings routines

Step 3: Check for Updates

Outdated firmware can cause performance issues. Open the SmartThings app, navigate to the Hub tile, and check for any pending firmware updates. Updates typically install automatically overnight, but you can manually trigger one from hub settings.

⚠️ Important: If your hub’s LED turns solid blue intermittently, this means it is losing its connection to the SmartThings cloud. This is often a network issue rather than a hub performance issue. See Article 6 for network troubleshooting steps.
