SmartThings: Organizing Locations and Rooms

Locations and rooms help you organize your smart home so you can quickly find and control devices. A location represents a physical address (like your home), and rooms are the areas within that location (like Kitchen, Bedroom, or Living Room).

Understanding Locations

Your Digital Lifestyles installation is set up as a single location linked to your home address. You do not need to create additional locations unless you have a second property.

Managing Rooms

Rooms make it easy to group devices and control them together. For example, you can turn off all lights in the Bedroom with one command if they are all assigned to that room.

Creating a New Room

  1. Open the SmartThings app and go to the Devices tab.
  2. Tap the menu icon (⋮) and select Manage Rooms.
  3. Tap the + icon to add a new room.
  4. Enter a name for the room and choose a wallpaper if desired.
  5. Tap Save.

Moving a Device to a Different Room

  1. Go to the Devices tab and find the device you want to move.
  2. Tap the device to open it, then tap the menu icon (⋮).
  3. Select Edit and change the Room field.
  4. Tap Save.

Location Modes

SmartThings has three built-in modes: Home, Away, and Night. You can use these modes in your automations to control behaviour. For example, you might want motion sensors to send notifications only when the mode is set to Away.

  • Home: Normal daytime operation.
  • Away: No one is home — security-focused automations activate.
  • Night: Nighttime settings, reduced lighting, quiet automations.

ℹ️ Tip: You can change modes manually in the app by going to the Home tab, tapping the menu, and selecting the mode. You can also automate mode changes based on time of day or your phone’s GPS location.
