SmartThings: Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Smart Home
A little regular maintenance goes a long way in keeping your SmartThings system reliable and responsive. Here are our recommended best practices.
Monthly Maintenance
- Reboot the hub: Unplug the hub for 30 seconds and plug it back in on the first of each month. This clears cached processes and helps prevent performance drift.
- Check battery levels: Open the SmartThings app and check battery-powered devices (motion sensors, contact sensors, water leak sensors). Replace batteries when they drop below 20%.
- Test critical automations: Manually trigger your security-related automations to make sure they still work as expected.
Quarterly Maintenance
- Review your automations: Remove or update any automations you no longer use. Old or redundant routines can slow down the hub.
- Check for firmware updates: Go to the Hub tile in the SmartThings app and check for pending updates. Updates often include performance improvements and security patches.
- Audit your device list: Remove any devices you are no longer using. Orphaned devices can cause errors in automations.
General Best Practices
- Keep the hub in a well-ventilated location away from heat sources
- Use a surge protector for the hub and router to protect against power spikes
- Avoid placing the hub inside a metal cabinet or enclosure, which can block wireless signals
- Keep the SmartThings app updated on all phones in the household
- Name your devices descriptively (room + device type) so automations and voice commands are intuitive
