SmartThings: What Is It and How Does It Work?
Samsung SmartThings is a smart home platform that lets you connect, control, and automate a wide range of devices from a single app. Whether you have smart lights, door locks, sensors, thermostats, or cameras, SmartThings brings them all together so you can manage your home from your phone.
How It Works
At the centre of your SmartThings system is a hub. The hub communicates with your smart devices using wireless protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and the newer Matter standard. It connects to your home internet so you can control devices from anywhere using the SmartThings app on iOS or Android.
What Your SmartThings System Includes
As a Digital Lifestyles SmartThings customer, your installation typically includes:
- A SmartThings Hub (or Aeotec Smart Home Hub) connected to your home network
- Smart devices pre-configured and assigned to rooms in your home
- The SmartThings app installed on your phone, linked to a Samsung account
- Basic automations and scenes set up during your installation appointment
What You Can Do With SmartThings
- Control lights, locks, thermostats, and more from your phone or voice assistant
- Create automations that trigger actions based on time, location, or sensor activity
- Set up scenes to control multiple devices with a single tap
- Monitor your home remotely and receive push notifications
- Integrate with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home via Matter
ℹ️ Tip: Your SmartThings hub should remain plugged in and connected to your router at all times for the best performance. If you unplug the hub, your automations and remote control will stop working until it reconnects.
