SmartThings: Wi-Fi and Network Connection Issues

A stable network connection is essential for your SmartThings system. If your hub keeps going offline or devices frequently disconnect, the problem is often related to your home network rather than the hub itself.

Network Fundamentals

  • Wired is best: Your SmartThings hub should always be connected to your router via Ethernet cable for the most reliable connection.
  • Use 2.4 GHz for smart devices: Most smart home devices (especially those using Wi-Fi) connect on the 2.4 GHz band, which has better range than 5 GHz.
  • Separate your hub and router slightly: Position the hub at least one metre from the router to reduce interference between Wi-Fi and Zigbee, which share the 2.4 GHz band.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Reboot your router and modem. Unplug both for 30 seconds, then plug the modem in first and wait for it to connect, followed by the router.
  2. Check for ISP outages. Confirm your internet service is working by checking other devices.
  3. Try a different Ethernet cable or port. A loose or damaged cable can cause intermittent dropouts.
  4. Check for IP conflicts. If you have many devices on your network, your router may be running out of DHCP addresses. Check your router’s settings to ensure the DHCP pool is large enough.
  5. Avoid double NAT. If you have a modem/router combo from your ISP and a separate router, make sure one of them is in bridge mode to avoid double NAT, which can cause connectivity issues.

Recommended Network Setup

  • Minimum 25 Mbps internet speed
  • A router that supports at least 50 concurrent devices
  • A mesh Wi-Fi system for homes larger than 1,500 square feet
  • Hub connected via Ethernet (not Wi-Fi) whenever possible

ℹ️ Tip: If your internet goes down, your hub will go offline but some automations that run locally on the hub (like Zigbee light switches) may continue to work. Cloud-dependent features like remote access and notifications will not work until internet is restored.
